Wolf Winter

After giving some ideas about what my NaNoWriMo story might be this year, in this post, I’ve now done my normal thing and gone for a completely different idea.
Yes it seems I’m up to my old tricks again. The ideas I was working on have all fallen by the way side and once again I’ve changed my mind. So we won’t be getting ‘Kingscross’ or ‘Rebellion’ (which is what the steampunk murder idea had evloved in to) or ‘Shadow of the Citadel’ this year. They are all good ideas and have been filled away in my ideas file for later use. It’s interesting to note that all of these stories have a strong sub-teranian theme and slightly gothic feel. The gothic feel I hope will find it’s way in this years story.
Instead this year I will be writing ‘Wolf Winter’.
The original idea for this came to me while I was thinking about those great children’s fantasy type of productions that the BBC used to do at this sort of time of the year. I’m thinking particularly the classic productions of ‘The box of delights’ and the Narna books which the BBC did way back.
I love the sort of ‘feel’ of those sorts of stories, the sort of modern day fairy tales. I love the sort of dark, gothic feel they had and the way that scared me when I was younger. I’m not really sure if I can pull that sort of thing off, but I’m going to give it a try. As they are so found of saying in nanowrimo land, ‘it’s only the first draft’
The story is going to be set in 3 different worlds (or maybe just 2) which are currently close enough to each other that you can cross between them. One of those worlds is going to be our own modern day world and it’s from this world that we are going to get our heros, three teenagers that cross over between the two worlds and get trapped then have to find there way back (mmm sounds not unlike my first nanowrimo) but in the process they end up saving the world!
These three characters I’m taking from my aborted attempt to enter the Time’s Children’s Book competition.
I did plan to enter a story based around The Route from my first nanowrimo story invloving these three characters, but for various reasons this story never got beyond 3 or 4 pages. I did however get some detailed character sketches done for the 3 main characters.
Since this story is starting out as a story aimed at the same sort of age, I figured it made sense to use the work I’d already done.
Other elements that will (might!) find there way in the plot are packs of intelligent wolves hunting men. A twisted fantasy world where fairies are very bad things indeed and where you avoid unicorns and a grizzled old woods man who seems to know more than he should about what’s going on.
Thats all I’m going to give you for the moment. You’ll have to wait till November 30th to see if any of these make it in to the story (and so will I!)
