Web design

So this is part of 3 of my epic length post, which I started here and continued here, so...what else do I have to add...?
...well web design.
Now is a very, very exciting time for web design, so it’s probably a good time for me to change to that direction!
Anyway we have lots of new browsers or new versions of browsers. We have IE8, Firefox 3.1 beta, nightly web kit builds (okay that happens all the time anyway) and of course the big news last week, the new kid on the block Google Chrome.
We also have a lots of good stuff happening inside the browser, new javascript engines, lots of new javascript libraries and some of the cool stuff in CSS 2.1 actually being implemented!
So the really big news was the surprise release of Googles Chrome browser. Firstly I’ve got to say it is, at the moment PC, so boooo. Okay Google have plans for Mac and Linux versions in the pipeline.
So is this big news? Yes I think it is. It is a good thing to have more browsers out there, especially for me as a browser freak!
It uses webkit for the engine but it seems to use a different version from the version used in the PC version (yes I have that installed on some virtual machines (I don’t have any real PC hardware actually running now)). I can tell this because of my standard test which is how much it scores on acid test 3. Chrome gets 79 and Safari on the PC gets 75 (interestingly on the mac it only gets 74 and webkit (the nightly beta version) gets 98).
So chrome uses the same sort of idea as IE8 and runs each tab in separate process, which should mean its more stable but that it uses more memory. I’ve not done any real testing on this, but I don’t think it will have much effect on me, since I don’t tend to use my browser much like that. I don’t use many web apps, apart from iGoogle which is one of my home pages and google docs from time to time and thats it really.
And er....okay this post isn’t going anywhere right now so I’m going to leave it there.
