Thing's in our way

Some thoughts on achieving your dreams.
Yes this a another blog about I netcast. How many of these things do I watch/listen to I here you ask? Well currently about 15!
Anyway the in question this time is the Merlin Show, Merlin Mann's latest and perhaps greatest web site.
So this netcast started out looking like it was just going to be another productivity show (not that this a bad thing, I like 43Folders too!) That would have been okay, but I seems to have taken a completely different and much better route of Merlin interviewing various independent musicians. This is way more interesting than just productivity stuff. These people are really interesting to listen to and what's more they play, write, perform some really cool tunes some of which are available for free download (legally!) The title tune Blue Diamonds, is great!
Anyway, the current interviewee is John Roderick of the Long Winters, which just happen to perform Blue Diamonds. In the last installment he said something that really struck me. He said that most peoples dreams are surprisingly achievable.
If this where the case then why don't more people achieve there dreams? I assume that many don't simply because if more people did the world would be a much happier place.
I tend to agree with him, that most peoples dreams are well with in there reach. Now here I'm not talking about financial or material dreams because quite frankly those sorts of dreams aren't really dreams at all. Achieving those sorts of dream might make you happy for a bit, but they are not really the sort of achievements I'm thinking of here.
I'm thinking creative dreams, as in 'oh I'd love to be able to draw' or 'my dream is to be able to play the piano'. These dreams are achievable!
Yes they will take time, but then if it was easy to do, would it be worth doing? Probably not.
However the answer you would get from most people as to why they don't achieve these dreams is 'I don't have the time'
If you don't have the time your chasing the wrong dream. If what you want is a real dream then you will make the time to achieve it.
I have a little saying about this, 'the biggest thing standing in the way to our dream is our selves'.
So dose this mean I'm achieving my dreams and I'm a very happy person? Well I've achieved some of my dreams, I've written a few short stories and I got in to professional development, so on that score I'm not doing so badly. I've got other dreams too, get a story published in book form, become a professional author etc, both of which I'm working on. But am I a happy and motivated man as a result?
Well...er....no. Not at the moment. But that's a story for another blog entry!
