It always promissed to be good and I was expect a lot
of it, so did this weeks (and last weeks) two part
Steven Moffet Doctor Who story come up to
expectations?
To find out read on...
To find out read on...
Well how can I put this...
Yes, yes, yes it was as good as I was expecting/hopping for! In fact it was better! It was different from what I had been expecting, different but better.
Steven Moffat has always produced very strong stories in fact I would say that he had produced the some of the best and with tonight’s story, the best yet! I’ve octor Who changes">covered this before, but I think Doctor Who will be in very safe hands when he takes over as executive producer next year.
But on to this and last weeks story (Silence in the Library and Rivers Run) where to start?
Well it was billed as being the scariest story so far and well...I didn’t actually find it as scary/creey as Steven Moffets first story, The Empty Child. But just because it didn’t creep me out doesn’t detract from the story. No far from it.
The story did kind of weird me out a bit, if you know what I mean. I love that in a story, where strange things are going on and you have no idea what is happening now or what’s coming next, but then the pieces start to fall in to place and you think ‘Ah thats what’s going on!’. Some time’s when this happens your right, some times not.
Tonight with me, I was right. At the end of last weeks part I had no idea what was happening with the child and Doctor Moon strand of the story, but with Donna’s first scene with Doctor Moon the bits started to fall in to place for me.
Pretty soon I was convinced that they where stored in the system. This was great for me, because having recently finished The Monastery, a story which touches on a lot of the ground covered in tonight’s episode, in fact a lot more that is apparent from this one story. In fact my idea is that this story will only be a small part of a much larger story, it’s laying some of the early ground work for what I hope could be an epic story arc. But enough of my work and back to tonight’s episode.
There was a lot going on in this story, a lot of which I think is setting stuff up for future stories. Like, River, is she going to be or has she already been the Doctors wife? We know he has been married and had kids, so why not? And if she is did the Doctor do this just to set her up so she can save the people saved in the library, or was there something else there, like say real love?
And the Doctors real name. As soon as River said there was one word she could say that would convince the Doctor he could trust her, I knew it had be his real name. The Doctors name has been hinted at lot in both in the new and old series and I’m sure this will always be the case. It will always be speculated about, because I know it will never be reviled. I can’t be. As Steven Moffet him self said in the Doctor Who confidential after the program, no name will ever be good enough. The Doctors true name has been the source of so much speculation that if it ever was disclosed it would be such a let down, no matter what it is.
So as infuriating as it might be for some fans (including me) it must stay a mystery. It always best to leave some mystery in the story.
So other questions. Will we see Dr River in the series again? And if we do will we see any of the events hinted at in Rivers diary. In think in order the answer here are yes and no. I would guess we find out a bit more about her and her background with the Doctor in the last story of the season, but the events in her diary will forever remain just words.
But this is good, see my early point about keeping the mystery. And we have always had cool sounding things in this new series which pop up from time to time, but which we never find out more about. The Shadow Proclamation, which appears to be some sort of galactic government...maybe and the Medusa Cascades, which...oh I don’t know.
And one final big question in my mind is what happens to Donna? I think it seems likely she comes to some sort of sticky end, but when will that be? Is she going to be a one series sort of companion or is her eventual end some way off? Do the writers even know yet? Good questions. I don’t know, but what surprises me is that I care.
When it was announced that Donna was going to be a regular companion I thought ‘Oh dear’. I didn’t like her at all in the ‘The Runway Bride’ story, which to me is the weakest story of the whole new series so far. I just couldn’t see her working as a companion since in that story she was shouting all of the time. Mind you I though the same ‘Oh Dear’ when it was announced that Billy Piper would be playing the companion in the new series and she worked out great and so is Donna.
So lots of questions then and I’m sure that some of them will never get answered in the program it’s self, which is great because that means I’ve got to come up with my own answers and they will be much better than any one else could come up with, surely?
For me the best line was the Doctor telling the shadows to look him up in the books of the library. That was enough to make them stop and give up the survivors in the library. The Doctor is truly what the shadows fear!
