Night of emotion

So another year, another Eurovision
song contest.
Was it the same old, thing for me? Well yes, no real surprises. The normal voting for neighboring or friendly countries happened again, which basically leaves the UK out in the cold. Wogan moans about it as normal. So yes it was the same old contest, but I don't know, this year...well maybe I'm getting a bit jaded like Wogan him self, who in probably the only surprise of the night said he might quit the Eurovision role.
Would the show be the same with out him? For sure the answer there is no. Would I bother watching it with out, probably not. Will I bother next year even if he stays? Maybe not!
Wow, yes I know that's near hearsay coming from me. I used to love the whole silly mess that Eurovision was, but now, I'm not so sure.
I'd like to think it's not just the fact that we don't get votes for our songs any more and I'm not being childish and saying 'We'er not winning, so I'm not going to play any more', but I think there might be a bit of that in mu thinking here. I do believe that that last few years we have had some weak (and in one case pathetic) entires, but this years song was a good one and while not a show winner, it deserved more points that 14.
I think the biggest reason for the loss of the old Eurovision magic is, that the songs just aren't good or different enough any more. Okay this years there was a bit more variety that the last few years, but the problem was that the songs just weren't so good. A lot of them where sung in English, which I think is wrong, if the country has it's own language they should use it, except that is for Germany. German is not a language that sounds good sung (in my opinion!)
Even the few really silly songs which we had last night (Croatia and Latvia spring to mind here), weren't as funny or as silly as previous ones have been. I think that Irelands entry should have made it through to the final this year. That sort of satire just might be what Eurovision needed this year.
And what about Wogans comments that '...western European participants have to decide whether they want to take part from here on in because their prospects are poor'. Mmm, sour grapes, yes for sure, but I also see that what he says is actually right. After all Italy have given up with the contest now. I wonder if those nations which can't rely on neighbors or allies votes will start to lose interest too. If they did what would this mean for the funding of the event. Since these nations are the founder nations which do put more money in the event that any one else (this the only reason that UK is in the final every we, we are guaranteed a place because we do put so much money in). Could this be the beginning of the end of the Eurovision song contest.
I think maybe yes it is. A sad day.
