It's getting nasty out there

Two stories today made me realise that the internet has grown up
Botnet Mafia in Online Turf War: "An anonymous reader writes ' The kind of turf war seen in the real world by drug gangs is being replicated by the criminal gangs behind spamming botnets, and things are turning nasty.'Read more of this story at Slashdot.
(Via Slashdot.)
And this one from the Economist
Yes, the internet has grown up. I know this because it's now being used as a weapon.
To be honest, I've know about the use of botnets, for a while, well since I work as a developer for a internet security firm you'd hope that I would.
So I guess that since we are talking about Mankind that it was invertible it would get used as a weapon, sooner rather than later. It seems the standard route for technology is that it starts out as a toy, then becomes a tool and finally a weapon.
And cyberpunk those stories I read 10 years ago are now (mostly) a reality.
Still it's nice to think that my work might in some small way help against this sort of thing, okay so I mainly work on the front end and middle ware stuff and not the scanning engines etc, but it still must help.
