How I did

My post keynote thoughts
So that was the week that was and which contained Steve Jobs keynote.
My, admittedly copied predictions, where not so far off. Yes we had the 3G iPhone, that is not surprise, it had to happen. It has GPS, which I didn’t think it would and no forward facing camera, so no video iChat.
As I guessed, no tablet Mac. I just don’t see Apple ever doing this, and in any case we already have the very cool looking modbook.
And now on to 10.6. An interesting one this, not going for new features this time, just improved performance. This brings up a few important points for me.
Firstly is this upgrade going to cost the same as previous releases/updates? If it is, Apple are going to have a hard time selling it. But why should that be?
This to got me thinking. It’s odd that software is really sold on features and not speed or reliability (how else would Windows have become dominant in the world otherwise?) I guess a lot of software development is driven by people like me that want new things to fiddle with each version. But it seems that Snow Leopard only new features are aimed squarely at the business world with the addition of Exchange integration.
So will users pay for basically more speed and stability?
I know most PC users (i.e business users) wouldn’t, but will Mac users? Maybe they will. After from the sounds of it this will be the turbocharged version of Leopard and in the car world people are perfectly happy to pay for more horsepower and speed.
The other thing that I though about Snow Leopard was, is this the version that they should have released last year?
After all, each release previous to Leopard was faster than the previous on the same hardware. Leopard, apparently isn’t, I’ve not experienced this my self yet, but I might soon as I’m going to update my macbook from Tiger to Leopard, because I need to use some of the Leopard only software on it now.
Also it seems that Leopard is the least stable of the big cats so far from Apple. Now I have experienced this my self. Since updating to Leopard I’ve had double the number of kernel panics. Okay the figures are still pretty good 2 before Leopard, 2 after the update and both of these where caused by an old firewire hard drive (and it’s un-surported chip set). Both of these things make me think that Leopard was a hurried release, which is interesting since it was also late. Maybe Apple was distracted by something else. Mmm I wonder what that could be...?
Anyway it will be interesting to see what happens over the next 12 months with Snow Leopard.
And the updates to .mac. Now that sounds good, almost makes the cost worth while, but as I mentioned in my last entry I’m probably going to open a new .mac or rather mobile me account in any case.
