Having just finished a hard evenings work at my
keyboard I was stuck by the difference between my
real and computers desktop.
I have always liked a very clean desktop on my
computer.
I’m not one of the people I see every day at work, which keep every single file, program, web site they will ever use/visit on there desktop.
Yuk, how can they work that way? Haven’t they heard of folders? Anyway I digress.
On my PC at work I have just four icons and one of those, the trash...sorry rubbish bin, I can’t get rid of with out restoring to some system hackery. For those that are interested, the icons I do have are RDP client, event viewer and command prompt. Thats it! I guess you could also count the icons in the quick lunch bar as well, in which case you can add IE (yes I know, I have to use it!) and Outlook (ditto). So just six icons.
For a lot of days these programs are all I’ll need, so the fact that the others are at least two clicks away in the start menu is not a problem.
On my macs the situation is even more minimal, heres a screen shot of my desktop at home.
Yes thats it, not one single icon. The only thing cluttering my work space is the system monitoring goodness of iPluse. I have tried living with out knowing what my system is doing on a second by second basis, but I just can’t, I just need to know!
I figure that most of the time the desktop is completely covered with various windows anyway, so why put things there?
I did for some time have just plain coloured backgrounds, for the same reason, but in the end I found a blank screen was a little intimidating at boot time, much in the same way that a blank sheet of paper can be intimating when you start to write or draw something, so I went for very calming images straight from apples standard desktop images.
It’s an interesting side note, that two of my family, both non-techies, saw these images and wanted them for there own desktops as well. It seems apple has very cool and desirable images as well as hardware.
You can see that I like clean uncluttered desktops on my computers, so why then does my actual desktop look like this?
No I don’t know either. Answers on a postcard please!
(yes there is a dalek, four dice and the power supply from a sadly dead apple TV on there, oh and or course where would I be with an Aardvark creeping in to shot!)
