Day 9

Well the first week is over and I’m now facing the
hardest challenge of the whole month...week 2
It is commonly held wisdom that week 2 is the hardest
week of all in Nanowrimo.
You have got over the joy that you can actually churn out at least 1667 words a day and the initial excitement you had for your story is beginning to fade. You are starting to see holes in the plot. It’s week 2 alright!
What I find is very useful to remember is that at worse 3 week is only 7 days away and once your past halfway (assuming you are at that stage) things get easier. The plot flows better, you know your characters better and hell there is only 15 days more of this insanity left!
Well I’ve kind of had a little taste of 2 week early this year. People watching my word count might have noticed I posted no new words on Tuesday, this is quite normal, since Tuesday is the ‘boys night in’ so I know nothing is going to get done, but then due to the early attack of week 2 blues, I didn’t post any words on Thursday either. Was this the end for this years story?
No of course not! It was just a blip and now as I write this, I’m just over (by 60 odd words) todays, Sundays, figures.
So how is the story going then?
Well as normal it’s taken a few extra turns that I didn’t plan for and I’ve got a whole new sub plot emerging which wasn’t part of the original, but I think that is good. Extra sub plots mean extra words!
The whole thing is much darker than I had planed it to be. I knew the start and probably the first 60 to 70 percent was going to have a dark feel to it, but things have got much darker than I thought they would. Don’t worry it’s not going to be all doom and gloom, the final section of the story will have some interesting twists and turns and will have a lot more action scenes in it. The end will I hope avoid being a ‘every one lived happily ever after’ Hollywood style end, but will still be an upbeat ending.
I have as in last years story, inserted a few very obscure references to other books, films and stories. Don’t worry if you’ve missed them, they aren’t at all important to the plot, but if you have seen them, they do give a pointer to the direction the plot twists will take the story.
I’m not really sure about the view point I’ve used for the story, a third person view, but centered on the main character. I did chose it for a reason. The reason is that the whole thing does indeed revolve around this man and more so than Joseph is the man that knows how to work these trains. Joseph is pivotal when...okay that would be saying too much!
But I’m now thinking that a first person view from his point of view would work better. Still as they say it’s only a first draft.
The problem is that none of my stories ever seem to move beyond that first draft stage!
Anyway it’s back to the keyboard. Week 2 is upon us, so I need to get those words in when I can!
