Creative Chaos

Are we able to think clearly when surrounded by mess because chaos is inherent in all our minds, even those of the great writers and thinkers, asks Clive James.

An appropriate story, given that a), I’m still trying to finish this years nanowrimo story, b) my life is currently in a bit (a lot!) of turmoil and c) I’ve just done a clean up/re-arange of my desk.
So does all of the chaos in my life help with the writing? I’m not so sure.
I think the chaos is good for idea’s, well judging by the number of new idea’s that have gone in to my idea’s file recently it is. But the actual conversion of these ideas in to actual stories, I think that chaos is not a good thing. I need clam to write.
And I’m sure what the productivity people say about untidy desks being distracting is at least partially right.
Since my desk has been getting a bit of a mess recently (nanowrimo is only partly responsible for this) it was time to clear it a bit. But this is not the only reason for the big desk changes. The main reason is that with my current job coming to an end and nothing new in site or likely to be for a while (given the current economic situation) I’m having to sell one of my Mac’s
Yes my mighty Quad core tower is going to be sold. It’s sad, but for the work that I currently do my trusty MacBook is more than enough and I need the money!
So I now have a relatively tidy desk, well okay it’s not that tidy. I did after all do the big tidy up yesterday, so it’s had 24 hours to accumulate junk. So is the new desk helping with my writing?
I don’t know yet! I’m currently writing this from my parents place, which is one advantage of having my main machine as a laptop, I’ve got everything on here and I don’t need to worry about syncing.
Anyway here is the picture of the new desk (compair it with this and this)
