30 years of the future
It was once for children, now it's much loved by adults but the authors of legendary British comic 2000AD are shocked how many of their predictions have come to pass.

You might have guessed from the general theme of this
web site, that I was a 2000AD reader.
I read it for around 100 issues some time in the early 80's and I even had some of the very early issues...er sorry, progs! Like prog 2 the big one, the one with the first dread! It would probably be worth something today, if I still had it.
Anyway on to my main point.
Yes I can see how looking from the point of view of 1977, today would seem to be a grim future indeed (and perhaps it is), we do have a lot of the things that where predicted in Judge Dread. The problem that I see is, we have all of these laws and surveillance with the idea of keeping crime down and that would be fine IF IT WORKED! It doesn't!
All we have are more and more laws that aren't enforced. We have surveillance which does nothing to reduce crime and it seems we have more and more criminals complaining about there rights. I think Robert A Heinlein said in best in Starship Troopers, 'you can’t have rights with out responsibilities'. What we need are in actual fact, some real Judge Dreads!
Okay, right wing rant over. I know I'm getting very right wing in my old age. And yes I do realise that the sort of powers that Judges have in 2000AD, would never work in the real world. The old adage about power corrupting is still true for humans! But laws with out any real enforcement or punishment and rehabilitation are toothless.
Right got that off my chest, normal service is now resumed....
